Mel Hanson

Mel Hanson was a Post War California artist, known for abstract figurative paintings and assemblage. He was highly influenced by the German expressionists and his circle of friends in the Firehaus Group working in Stockton, California between 1958 and 1962. He was also one of the first artists in California to incorporate pop imagery into his oeuvre. Although he tragically died young at the age of 24, his illustration skills and adventurous use of materials lent his work an uncanny maturity.
